How to Start the Conversation

Quick Links | One Comment

Starting a conversation about hearing loss with someone close to you can be difficult. People may become defensive or upset especially if they perceive hearing loss to be a sign of ageing.

Choose the right time to talk about hearing loss

People will often become frustrated when trying to communicate with someone who has a hearing loss. This is particularly true if you find yourself repeating yourself or feel that you are being ignored. This is not the right time to talk about hearing loss as your frustration will be evident and may lead to defensiveness or feelings of inadequacy.

Instead, plan your conversation for a time when you are both relaxed and in a comfortable, quiet environment. Plan what you want to say in your conversation ahead of time to ensure that you can clearly communicate your concerns.

Be Compassionate and Patient

For many people, deteriorating hearing can be frustrating and overwhelming. Many people associate hearing loss with aging and this may bring up a host of confusing or negative emotions. It is important to be aware of these feelings when having a conversation about hearing loss.

Explain how the person’s hearing loss affects you without speaking in an accusatory tone. For example; I’ve noticed that you are not participating in conversations like you used to?

Give Practical Guidance for Next Steps

Think about some practical next steps you can suggest to the person. Usually this will involve visiting your GP for an initial examination and referral. If the person doesn’t feel comfortable visiting a GP right away, show them the HearSpace website or have a read of some of the simple adjustments that can be made to ease communication.
